988 is a free, confidential, 24/7 line for anyone who is struggling or worried about someone else. Here's what it is, when to reach out, and what to expect when you do.
Need help now? In the U.S., call or text 988, or chat at 988lifeline.org. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.
When you're overwhelmed, it can be hard to know who to call. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline was created to make that easier: three digits you can remember, connecting you to a trained counselor any time of day or night.
Knowing about 988 before you need it can make reaching out feel less daunting, for yourself or for someone you care about.
What Is 988?
The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is a national network of crisis counselors you can reach by phone, text, or online chat. It's free, confidential, and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
You don't have to be thinking about suicide to reach out. As the Lifeline puts it, 988 is for everyone. That includes anyone dealing with:
-
Emotional distress or overwhelming feelings
-
Thoughts of suicide
-
Anxiety, depression, or other mental health struggles
-
Alcohol or drug use concerns
-
Worry about a friend or family member
-
Simply needing someone to talk to
Three Ways to Reach 988
-
Call 988. You'll hear a short menu: press 1 for the Veterans Crisis Line, press 2 for Spanish, or stay on the line to reach your local 988 crisis center.
-
Text 988. You'll answer a few quick questions, then connect with a counselor by text. Spanish speakers can text AYUDA.
-
Chat online at 988lifeline.org. A few short questions help the counselor understand how to support you.
Interpretation services are available in many other languages, and the Lifeline also offers options for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
What Happens When You Reach Out
According to the 988 Lifeline, here's what to expect:
-
You're connected to a trained counselor. If there's a short wait, you'll hear hold music or get a message that you're being connected.
-
They'll introduce themselves and ask if you're safe.
-
They'll listen. You can share what's going on in your own words, at your own pace.
-
They'll work to understand how what you're facing is affecting you.
-
They'll offer support and may share resources for ongoing help.
The service is free, and your conversation is confidential. If you have questions about what happens during or after a call, you can ask the counselor directly.
When to Reach Out
There's no wrong reason to contact 988. Consider reaching out if:
-
You're having thoughts of suicide or of hurting yourself
-
Your feelings seem too big to handle on your own
-
You're struggling with alcohol or drug use
-
You're worried about someone and don't know what to do
-
You just need someone to talk to
You don't need to wait until things feel like an emergency. Reaching out early is a sign of strength, not weakness.
If someone is in immediate danger, such as a medical emergency or an attempt in progress, call 911.
Reaching Out for Someone Else
You can contact 988 if you're worried about a friend or family member. A counselor can help you think through what to say, how to keep them safe, and what to do next.
If you're with someone who may be thinking about suicide:
-
Ask directly. Asking "Are you thinking about suicide?" won't put the idea in their head, and it shows you care.
-
Listen without judging or arguing.
-
Stay with them if you can, or make sure someone else is with them.
-
Contact 988 together, or call 911 if they're in immediate danger.
